whitetail meat for the Huston clan..
« on: September 29, 2011, 03:39:13 pm »
I took this buck at four yards from the ground last night.. hit him in the center of the throat as he ducked under some branches.. followed up on the shot this morning and found him in a cut hay field near the river.. coyotes had eaten one hind quarter but rest of meat is still good..cedar arrows, Yellowstone longbow and zwickey head 125 grain... deer went about three hundred yards.. arrow fell out at about eighty yards and then he really bled out fast .

I say you go waaaay past making it up with the coyotes.  I can't let a deer or hog go overnight where I hunt.  Changes the way I have to blood trail.  I take every shot at them I can for sure.

Nice buck and great pictures as always.

Nice little buck, Mike. The yotes have to eat too. At least they don't go for the backstraps first.  ;)

Good looking buck. Looks like it's still relatively warm out there.

Whereabouts in Texas?  My deer lease is near Abilene.  Good luck on your hunt.

Wow, that's only 50 miles from the lease.  It is near the town of Cross Plains.  Nice country there and pretty good deer and hogs too.  There was a wildfire this summer not too far from Albany.  You should have a good time.  A little rain came through there a couple days ago.  Otherwise it's been terrible dry.  There's a good place to eat in Abilene I haven't gotten to yet.  I can pass that along if you have time to get to town.  Have a great hunt.

Well I can tell you I am excited to get to go along with Hawk and Stacey hog and deer hunting in Texas!   Have never hunted hogs before so am really looking forward to giving it a try!  Shot a wart hog in Africa with a rifle, but that is not the same as hunting with stones and sticks!  Its been a record hot and dry Sept. here so have not shot an elk yet.  Am taking my David Knight Classic bow and my old stand by bow that Mr. Parker made for me!  Hunting anything with the Hustons is always a memory maker!  A/Ho Joe

Should be a great time for you guys.  The weather is gorgeous now with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s.  Might be a little cooler at night over there on the plateau.  I'm over near Dallas so I only make it out to the lease a couple times a month during the season.  Let me know if there's anything you need.  If you come through Dallas I'd love to put faces with names.  If you're driving and have space to haul osage home, let me know.  I should be out there next weekend.

Good hunting.
