Wood ID help Please

Anybody know what this might be? Dull red boring and the I sanded a peice and now it's a pretty red curly looking wood.

It came from Three rivers archery when I ordered Bamboo from them Years ago. I just figured it was some scap that they used to keep everything straight and too narrow for the bow I was making. So I forgot about it till I was looking for knife handle material today and rediscoverd it. Marlin
