wtt for deer leg bones

thats about it. have numerous paleo and/or archery related items.
would like to gather as many deer leg bones as i can get for arrow point making and other projects.
thanks!

ps elf, coyote, and many other critters bones would work too!

    Sadiejane, depending on your location you could talk to your local deer processing place. Here in S.Carolina we have many places in each county that process deer by the hundreds especially now during deer season. Great place to ask for bones, sinew, antler and hide.

If you are going to make arrowheads or knife blades from them you don't want them boiled or cooked in any way.  It softens the collagen matrix that the calcium is affixed to, raw is best.

JW= We boned out 143 this week. Next week will probably be similar. If anyone's interested, let me know. All hides and antlers are spoken for.

Hi Sadie, I can probably get you some. How many do you want? I get sinew and hides from a local game processor, and planned on getting some femurs for my own crafts so I'll probably be grabbing a few anyway.

In reference to white tail leg bones for arrow heads.

What is the proper method for preparing the bones for trade or arrow head making?
I have started amassing quite a few bones as a byproduct of sinew harvesting and don't want to mess them up.

Do you wash them with dish soap and lay them out in the sun?

You certainly want to use a strong grease cutting detergent, Dawn works great!  Sun only bleaches, something has to get rid of the fat.

Washing the leg bones won't help, much.  The bones will "bleed" oils for a little while.  They need to sit outside for awhile

I just throw mine in the back of my small garden till they are bleached out. And check with me in a few weeks, our Elf Season opens next weekend. :)

For some reason my girls[sadie/Hannah ] only eat the meat and sinew off,then I just go gather them up all over the cabin yard in the spring. Easy. ;) ;D our Elf season stays ope here year round Eddie. :) ;D Guess that why we don't see many,all been killed out. :) :)

Must be nice pappy.  I have a yellow lab and a blue healer that eat everything.  I threw two whole backbones with ribcages in and the only thing left was a few vertabrae.
