Beltsander for bow making......

  Anybody have any advice or tips that I should be aware of when looking to buy one of these for the shop?

Get a 6 x 48 and turn it on its side so you can use the whole length for limb edges and such. Thats my two cents anywho.

Menards has 6" x 48" for around $180.00. They are a sub-brand, but I have zero issues with the same brand planer.

  Thanks guys....  i only plan on using it for rough work, so I don't think I need to spend a whole lot of money on it

I have a Delta 6X48. Worth every penny. I ddn't use a belt sander much at first either, but it gets plenty of work these days.

It can do tips, handles, edges, tapers and everything in between. Great tool to have around for sure, especially if you build many board bows.

I have 2 of the smaller belt sanders, 4x32" I think.  Bought one new and the other off Craigslist.  I keep a course belt on one and a fine belt on the other.  They do come in handy.

I do most of my rough in tillering with one. I also have a wood hog 12" circular table sander that will eat some wood real quick with 40 grit.

Yes, if you can get the 6 x 48.  I also have an off brand horizontal.  It gets plenty of use and has held up well.  Also, invest in a belt dresser.  Its like a big eraser that extends the life of your belt by cleaning some of the embedded wood fibers out of it.

  I like the 6x48. I use to buy the little 4x36 deltas but I went through at least 1 or 2 a year. If you are not making a lot of bows the smaller one will do ok.

I've had a 6x48 Grizzly for the past twenty five years or so. I use it all the time for edges, tips,etc. Cool tool.

Mine is a 6 x 48 with a belt driven motor which I inherited from Dad. I use it for rough tillering, handle shaping, nock shaping and lots of other things including point tapering. Jawge
