steam straightening

I have a little rice cooker that gives a fair stream of steam. What would work better?

I think you will burn up your rice cooke with the amount of time & steam needed.

You  don't need much heat to straighten arrows. I use our gas kitchen stove.

Dry heat with a little oil to prevent scorching.         I wouldn't use steam for arrows.

I bundle green shoots up for a few months before I use heat on them. What shoots are you using?   With sourwood you can remove the bark immediately and it won't check but most others that I know of check badly. You may be able to remove all the bark except for 2" at each end. I've heard that will keep them from checking. I would only try a few first to see.

Pat, I'm using Youpon holly. I hear its really hard to straighten when dry.

I think I'd use dry heat but leave the bark on. That will produce steam as the moisture under the bark heats. I've never tried youpon. It doesn't grow here and I didn't know better when I lived in Bluffton, SC.    I think Patrick(Jackcrafty) might have a build along in the "How To" section or you could PM him and ask how he straightens youpon.

Pat, I may try one leaving the bark on with dry heat. I have been hitting Jackcrafty up for advice since I saw he used Youpon. I just wanted to give the guy a break. I did pm him, he told me about a couple devices that will work for steam straightening. I tried yesterday just laying it over a small pot of boiling water, with little luck. I just need to practice I'm sure. Thanks for your advice, you are always Johnny on the spot with answers. I just wish I had more to give back.

I heat straightened a few with bark on and they are seasoning before I debark. I then bought a tea kettle and straightened a few without bark. Tea kettle works good. If the ones with bark on that took heat don't check, I'll be happy.
