Making arrows for the first time
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:20:43 pm »
Hello I have just joined this forum and I want to get started in making primitive arrows. I know nothing about making arrows and I want to start out making arrows for my old ben pearson all american 35 pounds at 28" AMO 64. If any of you have any tips and stuff I really need it i have no idea what to do or how to start so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just guessing here, but the bow has a cut-in arrow shelf, right?  If so, being center shot the bow will probably not be too very picky about arrow shaft spine weight.  As long as the spine weight of the arrow shaft is close to your bow weight they should fly fairly straight.

What are you looking to accomplish with the arrows?   Do you just want arrows to throw at a target or are you wanting to challenge yourself with crafting arrows that could have came from a Lakota warrior's quiver?  Or maybe you are in the Society for Creative Anachronism and your personna is a samurai so they have to be cane arrows shafts?
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

do a search on 'Half Eye' in the members and scan his postings. Rich crafts some absolutely wonderful replicas I think you would find very informative.
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.

Here are four different threads that will help you:

http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,31668.0.html
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,31593.0.html

http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,12020.0.html
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,13025.0.html

The last two are by jackcrafty and are pretty in depth tutorials.  The very last one is a how-to on making an Eastern Two Fletch.  This will get you started or else scare you off and prevent you from getting addicted to this strange affliction.   >:D
