Hickory backed erc board?
« on: April 09, 2012, 10:32:38 am »
I was in Home Depot the other day and they had some real pretty cedar boards that looked like the eastern red cedar you guys make bows out of sometime. Have any of you make one out of a board? I would probably hickory back it. The erc is good in compression, right? Also I see some you build them with small knots visible in the belly which I think adds to the beauty. Some of these boards were wide enough that there were lengths available with no knots. Should I avoid them if possible? Also, I think I read somewhere that the tighter the rings on these the better, right?
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Most likely, that cedar is not Eastern Red. It is very soft and chrysals in compression. I have used it for handles material with limited success. It is not suitable for bow wood.
