Start of a long-term project
« on: September 24, 2007, 03:53:30 pm »
Here's what I'm going to be working on for quite some time.  It's the beginning of a hornbow, inspired by Turkish/Persian designs.  It is 44" ntn, measured around the curves, and 1 1/8" wide.  The core is one piece of river birch(except for a thin sliver used to build up the riser.  The horn is Gemsbok.  The sinew will be elk.  The pics aren't that great, but they will have to do since the wife has the goosd camera with her.

Looks nice and clean.  I think we all have a long term project kicking around some where.  Justin

Nice!

I'll be  ;D if I manage something like that!
Looking forward to seeing the progress :)

Did you straighten the horn and/or did you bend the core before before glue-up?

The core was bent into that shape with steam before the glue-up.

looks really nice , did you groove (tooth)   the core and horn before glueing?
And do you have any sinew on it yet?

The horn and wood core were given shallow grooves with a jigsaw blade.

That bow already looks good.  ;D  I'll be watching your progress. I know there is one of those somewhere in my future. I'll have to do some searching. ;D     Pat

Go for it, PAt.  This one has been a challenge already.

Looking forward to the finished project.  I have always wanted to try to make one of those.  Keep the pictures of the progress coming.
