Tillering string?

Can someone post how to make a tillering string?  At this time I'm not looking for a home made string, just something to start tillering my roughed out stave.  ?

What can be used as the string?  How to tie a loop?   for the other end, I know how to tie a timber hitch - well, in theory.

I use a piece of parachute cord with a slip knot on each end.    Pat

Clothesline rope from Wal-mart with a couple slipknots has always worked for me.

Would my bow stringer with the leather cups work

Sure will.  I use mine until I am able to put the bow in low brace.

I do like madcrow.  I use a bowstringer until I get to low brace then cut the nocks and make a string.

I use a 7 ply string of flax shoemakers twine knotted at one end for a timber hitch, slip knot on the other.

Same- except a loop and a bowyer's knot. It becoes the bow string later .

are you guys referring to "550 cord"? does that stuff stretch? i thought that stuff was nylon.

This is for my early long string. Once I see that the bow will bend evenly on the long string to about 8" I brace it low(4") and use a short string. It is the o.d.green cord with white strands in the middle. I always heard it called parachute cord.     Pat

carpenter374 - Yup, 550 parachute cord. It only stretches a little, but bracing takes it all out.
