Little osage from a belly split (more pics added)
« on: February 16, 2013, 02:53:27 am »
Being in this year's bow trade and researching my victim, I realized that I haven't posted any of the bows I've made recently.  So, here's this one.  It's from the belly split from a stave I made a bow out of last year.  Since there wasn't much wood to work with I decide to keep it simple. Should be a weekend project, yeah right. haha I ran into a diagonal pin knot right at the fade. This knot wasn't visible untill I removed the wood down to floor. The knot came out the side of the limb about 1/16 up from the back of the bow.  Not a good place for a pin knot.  So, I extended the fade/sight window on the upper limb.

The stave had a prop twist so that needed to heat corrected and I wanted to heat in some reflex. Then I wanted to flip the tips slightly. While I was waiting for it to stablize, PatB posted a bow with a round belly.  That looks cool, I'll give that a try, I thought.  Having never crowned the belly of a bow, I took my tillering really slow.  So, my weekend project took 3 weeks to get to the shooting stage.  But, I loved the process. Rounding the belly, taking narrow, thin sliver of gold from the wood was quite a Zen experience.

Here's the spec:
58" ntn, 50 @ 26"
1.2" wide at the fade to mid-limb tapering to 3/8
The top limb has a little "S" curve 4" from the tip and pin knot on the side at mid-limb
Slightly bendy handle. I can feel it start to bend at about 20" through full draw.

The camera snapped at about 24 or 25 inches.  I'll get more pics tomorrow when I shoot it in.

I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Thanks Clint.  You're right about that yeller wood.  I bet one could make a 40# bow froma 60" long 3/4" wide of that stuff.  I'm going to splitting some bellies off of a couple staves tomorrow for potential trade bow action.  If I get a narrow little piece, I might just try a 3/4" wide osage bow.  :)

Hey you look familiar ...have we met somewhere before? ..lol.  looking perfect Dave ;)  ill agree tillering in the "round" is a joy. Careful if trying 3/4" wide with bows..you will have to have perfect string tracking ,and lateral stability can and prob will be an issue

Looking good Hedge! Sweet bend!

That's an awesome looking bow.  Coming from the North, I don't see much osage, but I may have to find some.  All these little yellow bows make me want to try one.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.  I appreciate them.

Del, I'm really likely the subtlely flip tips.  I've done that on the last 3 or 4 bows I've made.  The lines are pleasing to eye and it seems I get a tad more early draw weight.  Or, it could be just my imagination or I'm just getting better at bow building.

Pearly, great minds think alike.  :) I studied at the feet of GMC, he's a neighbor.  He makes mostly cut in handle, slightly bendy handle bows.  So, this style is my comfort zone.  And, this little stick almost demand that style.

Chris, I'm looking forward to seeing you again at the Classic.  I hadn't thought far enough in advance about a 3/4" bow to consider stability issues.  I'm not going to intentially, reduce a perfectly good piece of osage to those dimentions, but should I end up with a little sliver, I'll have to give it a try. ;)
