Osage Warbow, 90# @ 32"...
« on: April 19, 2013, 04:31:09 pm »
Here is an osage warbow I recently made. I wasn't sure it was gonna make "warbow" status at first, and I thought I was gonna end up with a 80# longbow, which is actually perfectly fine with me. It came out 90# @ 32" though, so I guess I should post this bow in the warbow forum instead of the normal bows forum. It is actually a nice weight for me. It is 69 1/4" nock to nock, I forget how much set, but not too much. You can see in the pictures it has a pretty straight unbraced profile, it is hard to measure bows like this because of all the knots. There was a good amount of kinks and bumps in this stave, I love staves like that.

Had to plug a knot:

Unbraced:

Braced:

Here is about 28" or 29" (I am guessing by the length of the 30" arrow shaft) before I put nocks on it:

Here it is on my (fancy new) tiller tree at 32":

...And here is a link to the video I took of me drawing it on the tiller to 32" that I took the above picture from:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPMUS6iZktY

I am guessing the tiller could be better in spots, but I had a couple deflexes here and there which make it look a bit hingy and weird. Overall I figure I am gonna call it a bow and be done with it,  ;D.

EDIT: Fixed the pictures.

Stunning.  As others have said, those nocks are flawless.  Really nice seeing the sapwood on the osage as well.  Really nicely done mate.

That is some crazy @$$ bend you got there!  :o Less than 70 inches NTN, 90 pounds, sapwood 'backed', 32" of draw! Those are very good figured. Nicely done! Very sweet compass tiller.
Why the sapwood back? It can be done, obviously, but it's not the strongest solution.

Wow! Nicely done! And with the sapwood left on. Nice tiller and like others have said, those horn nocks are gorgeous.

A really beautiful bow.  Was the squeaky noise the tiller or those less-than-6 foot limbs screaming for mercy at 32"?    What's the finish, please?Like I said, very pretty indeed.

Thank you Yeomanbowman, :). lol The finish is pure beeswax, over an already burnished bow of course.

Thank you darksoul.  ;D It's funny, I have by far made more sapwood backed osage bows than ring chased osage bows (which is probably pretty apparent anymore, lol), and my thinking is that with a good piece of osage the sapwood is not gonna hurt too much at all. I have made osage bows from reflexed staves, with tons of sapwood, and had them not give up a bit of reflex. I think though that every piece of wood is different, so it might make a big difference in some staves but not others?, so I am not saying this is the case for sure, but this just hasn't been my experience....

...Although, I am sure if I was better and more patent at chasing rings, I would be arguing the exact opposite point right now, lol. The sapwood is at least more then strong enough in tension.

Thanks Robby and Abd!

Very nice bow. Extremely handsome .
It's working V hard at 32", sooner you than me leaving it on the tiller at that draw.
Personally I'd go over 6' for a 32" draw but you seem to have managed it in style., with a great tiller.
No room for error on a bow working that hard.
I doff my proverbial cap to you.
