Can someone sharpen stone points for me ?
« on: November 10, 2013, 01:02:14 am »
I've got  3 points that I traded for. I was told they are hunt worthy but I question that.
They will cut leather when I push them across it but it takes some force. Is that sharp enough ? If not can someone sharpen them for me? I'm not a knapper but I want to take a deer using stone. Thank you for any help or advice.

I'm sure you can get help with the sharpening if you meet up with a knapper in person.  It gets kind of expensive and risky (breakage) when sending through the mail.

I agree with Patrick, also if the knapper makes a mistake and breaks one..well.. if you cant get it figured out and get desperate try pressure flaking them yourself or grind the edges..

Thank you for the input guys. I don't know a single person locally who does primative let alone knapping. These are pretty stout heads and I know the risks. Totally on me if it doesn't work out and they break. They are big enough they could be reshaped if they did or just go on the display shelf. I don't even have a grinder. On the list along with many other things that.... Well someday. Lol.

Where are you located? Post some pics of the points if they cut leather then there prolly sharp enough to already deer have thin skin so it wont take much to penetrate to the vitals

Pics would definitely help.  String man just posted a tutorial on sharpening that would at least give you some idea what the edge should look like.

Pics to see where they are now not to discredit the knapper and their work first. Sharp stone points are a lot different than sharpened steel. I would recommend micro flaking the edge to create new sharp edges if they aren't sharp enough. Good luck

It looks like it has a pretty good edge on it already you could micro flake it of you want but id leave it deer have thin skin and it dont take much to stick them deep

first of all that is gonna bounce right off a deer...you have to make a smooth transition from point to shaft...if you can drag it across paper with no too much pressure and it slice it your ok....but that haft isn't gonna work...just sayin from experience....gut..Kirk
