arrowwood viburnum?

school me on this stuff..doesnt seem to be anyone using it..good ,bad or indifferent let me know your thoughts about it...Go!

The name says it all. Arrowwood and other viburnums make good arrows. There natural growth habit lends itself to arrows and darts. They have been used as long as arrows have. I've not used arrowwood but have used blackhaw viburnum with good results.

I started into some viburnum shoots this weekend, Greg (Badly Bent) gave them to me. I have one ready for fletching now. It scraped up and cleaned up easy, I barrel tapered mine with a scraper and sandpaper. The straightening was done over a gas burner and was very easy. So far so good. And they seem to weigh up.

One thing about viburnum is I will check badly if you peel the bark too soon. It likes to be quite dry before you work it.

Mine were cut last December according to Greg's label. It was DUSTY when I worked it, Im betting its quite dry.

The first viburnum arrow I made checked badly because I immediately stripped the bark. It was my first abo arrow, checks and all. I think I gave that one to Hawk(Mike Houston) and he carries it in his hunting quiver.
 The sourwood I use mostly now can be stripped as soon a it is cut and it will very rarely check.

I just got a batch last summer for the first time.  The stuff is fantastic.  It can bend like crazy before it breaks.  I've verified it myself and still find it amazing.

Arrowwood viburnum(Viburnum dentatum) is a common landscape plant. You should be able to find it at a local landscape nursery.

As everyone said, its good stuff. Not sure what kind of viburnum we have in California but I like it, its dense and hard and seems to carry a good heft to it. Gonna go in the next two weeks and harvest some more.
