My MacGyver Doe
« on: December 23, 2013, 12:19:03 am »
Funny story.  I haven't had the chance to take my son deer hunting yet this season, and I promised him we would go today.  I had a bow that I had to finish this weekend and this morning found me working on it bright and early.  Around 2:00 this afternoon I put the first coat of Poly on it, came inside and cut patches for my 50 Cal as I was completely out.  I grabbed the Bore Butter and lubed the patches and set them on the counter.  Went back out and applied the final coat of Poly and then came inside in a mad rush to head out hunting while we had time.  Jake and I grabbed our guns, my shooting bag and powder horn and off we went.  When we got to my stand around 4:00 we settled in.  I started to load my gun....and realized I had left the patches and the lube on the counter.  Dangit!  :(  No time to go back and get it by now.  So...I cut a patch out of my T-shirt and used Carmex Lip Balm as the lube.  It works!  I don't recommend it as a practice, but in a pinch.  Took a little Doe.  Sweet shot just behind the shoulder.  She ran 30 yards and dropped.  My little boy was elated as you can see in the pic.  She's small but to Jake she's a trophy and I know she'll be sooo tender.  Great day!

Nice to see a youngster smiling like that while hunting with Dad.  Great job! Keep him close, they all need that.

A lot of good lessons for the kid here. Don't give up but do what you must do to get the job done. Well done! Congrats on the doe.  8)

Thanks guys. You're right Pat about the lessons. Yesterday really had its share of 'em. Never say I can't...

Way to get him involved Bob. He has no idea how big or small she is. Dad shot one and that's ALL that matters!

Well said Pearl. He loves to hunt, and I love that he loves it. My goal was to get him out, have fun and make a good shot. I'm an older dad at 53, but I get as much joy from a hunt like this with him along as any I've ever been on.

I still remember the first and only time I went hunting with my dad. We did not see a thing but it will be one of my best memories forever!
