Tapering tool?

I bought a box of field points a while back, but didn't realize I needed to taper my arrows for them. My question is that the "pencil sharpener" type taper tools all recommend that they only be used on softwoods. Has anyone used them on hardwood shoot shafts like dogwood or privet?

work fine ! have used them on oak, maple, cherry, ash etc,.

Keep the blade sharp.  The point taper is 5 degrees so you can set up a jig and taper your arrows on a belt sander if you have one.

I've used the pencil sharpener type taper tool on ash shafts and while it takes more time and effort, it works.

The standard taper for the point end is 5deg and for the nock end is 11deg.
