Achmawi Ash and sinew bow.
« on: March 20, 2014, 11:36:07 am »
Here is my first attempt at a Native American bow, Ash with sinew backing, based on the bow in TBB vol 1. String is 10 strand hemp. Silencers are rabbit fur and leather grip. Not altogether a true replica but some of the materials I wanted are pretty hard / expensive to get in UK. Comments welcome. Also a picture of my first Horn sinew bow I made last year.

Brilliant work :) The horn bow is really nice.

Where do you get your sinew from in the uk? Only places I have seen are incredibly expensive.

Highland Horn in Scotland, also get my buffalo horn off him. Sinew is red deer tendon and cost £4.95 for 4 pieces I use about 10 to a bow.

Do you have a picture of the top bow unbraced?

Wanted to try the build out first before using Yew, just in case kapow no bow. Will make another using Yew and sinew.

I have a couple of pics of bow un-braced before it was decorated.

Id suggest getting an elliptical tiller on your next attempt. You only have 3-4" of limb bending and the rest isn't bending at all. Sinew is wonderful stuff on the back of a back, incredibly strong.

Thanks for advice, yeah you are right not bending enough throughout length, I think I overdid the sinew towards tips, but like I said its first one and a learning curve. I didn't want to waste what little yew I have.  Thanks again.
