Yes, a temporary nock should be cut. Some folks do it differently, some glue and wrap (with thread) a wooden wedge over the bows tip for the string to rest on. But I just cut a groove in the wood for the string to rest in. After the bow is tillered, I will then fit the horn, and make the horn nocks, but for most of the tillering I use temporary nocks.

the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."

That's very generous of you Mr. Lee.  Most kind.  Real mystery why you were kicked out of the EWBS.  You seem so friendly.

I generally glue a block of wood onto the back and file a temporary nock into that.
It shows it on my bowyers Diary (Mind a friend who recently went to China said my bowyers diary was unavailable on the internet there)

For the record, Brian is one of the most friendly and generous people involved in warbow archery.  He has always given the use of his farm, free of charge and always with food and drink thrown in, for many archery organisations just at the asking.  EWBS included.  He has and will often give out yew and elm staves for free for the love of bow building and archery and to spread the joy it brings.  This is a fact and as such is not subject to negotiations.  I would respectfully suggest that making statements like this is always a bad idea when you don't have posesion of unbiased information.  If you meet him in he flesh you will find him a very charming and friendly man.
