Red oak board bow

My first build, started with a trip to the depot.

Glued up the riser with a cedar space and Made the best layout I could based on grain pattern and made the cuts

Thanks folks, just at a stand still. Not sure if I want to back it, and if so, what with........
I know it's just a pic, but what's your opinion on this grain holding up without a backing?

I have a hickory backing strip but since this is my first bow I'm thinking I don't want to waste it on this build, maybe I will just try backless....

Yea, it's my first but I have watched so many videos and read so many articles I could host a conference!
I just don't have any experience so making critical decisions like whether or not to back it is crippling my progress.
It's ok that I'm paused though, I've learned to enjoy the process no matter if it takes longer than originally expected.

Yeah, I go thru that myself.  It's called "analysis paralysis".  It happens to me on certain bows, like one I have been working on for over 2 years.  It's windchecked osage with about as much superglue as wood!  At least I can say "ain't blown yet!" because I haven't worked on it enough to really get it far into tiller.  LOL!

I think your grain looks pretty good, I don't think you are taking any huge risk by not backing.  You did a good job laying the bow out on the board to take best advantage  of the grain, now defer to your own best judgement.

Got a ways to go, good looking start though, You know those won't fire out of that bow right  :P  I'm assuming this handle is to be super stiff or is the finger groove thing ok on quarter sawn?  I've seen a quarter sawn carved on the back into some massive celtic knottage so maybe.  Either way roll with it man!

I was assuming also... I have big hands so it's very thick there. Also since this is my first bow I'm only expecting to learn, hope it doesn't break in my hand :(

Tillering is hard work.... I don't know how much to take off just to get it close it's natural relaxed/strung  position.
