Anyone have any experience with this? My inlaws have about 500 pounds of it in their yard.

Ancientarcher posted a list by state of knappable rock.
Wonderstone is listed last for Utah.
But it is sought after by rock hounds.

well darn. I would like to get something that I don't have to buy, and the place to get utah wonderstone is kind of close. It looks almost like sand stone. Any Idea if it heat treats?

Stock photo. The stuff my Inlaws have is very orange and purple. Says that it has a hardness of 7,

I have read both, that it is, and that it isn't. It isn't as hard as glass, so it may be difficult to work. That was why I was wondering about heat treating it. It is very good looking stuff, and the place to gather it is only about an hour and a half from my house. My inlaws have a few boulders (150 plus pound rocks) of it in their rock garden. Next time i'm there I will sneak a chunk and see how it breaks.

To add to what has been said, I guess it is a type of Rhyolite. If that helps anyone decide if that makes it more knappable.

A couple of raps with a hammer stone to see if it breaks with a concoidial  fissure should answer your question.  If it is soft or easy to flake like opalized materals you can still knap it but its not much good for a tool or point!  Joe

I'm hoping to get down there in the next few days. Ill see if I can talk them into giving me some (They have a lot). I'm very new to all of this so sorry if my questions seem repetitive. I'll see how it breaks.

     Thanks for the picture.  That stuff is awesome!  I hope it will take heat, and you can make some fancy points from it.  Or send some to Tower, and see what he can do with it, or Jack Crafty, or Mullet.  Cool looking stuff.  Thanks again for the picture.

I know where some of that is in a yard in the town I work in >:D. I've been driving by over a year checking it out and trying to figure out what it was.
