Got some ERC!
« on: August 30, 2014, 05:23:36 pm »
Got a nice piece of ERC today while out scouting. The peoples land is full of it. Found one laying down with a nice branch off it. The side that was facing the trunk is clean as a whistle. How long should I season it. I wanna try a sinew backed ERC. The branch looked to be alive still, so the typical year?

Nice stave! What's the length?

My method in a nutshell:
- Seal ends. Leave bark on.
- Remove the 'bad' half, so you're left with a clean half log that will produce one bow.
- Put aside indoors to dry for a month or two/three.
- Remove the bark and bring the dimensions down to near finished dimensions. Stop at the beginning of floor tillering.
- Put aside until the woods stops losing weight. Typically takes three to six weeks.
Drying longer is better, but this is a pretty quick method that works well for all woods species with saplings under 3" across.

It's about 6' long. The small end is about 3" the bugger about 4". I see a sinew backed ERC recurve in the future

Hopefully I can talk him into letting me cut some more. I found more but this one was down already so couldn't waste her.
