Thanks guys!  Guess I'll finish sanding it and shoot it in and see how the tiller holds up.  At 62" it's the shortest bow I've made.  I'm amazed that you guys make great stiff handled bows that are much shorter than that, like the beauty that Danny just made for his buddy.  But I'm starting to think that anything is possible with Osage in the hands of a skilled bowyer.
Sorry, Danny, you ain't getting it back. ;D

Thanks Badly Bent!  I always admire the bows you make; beautifully tillered and finished.

I have mad some progress on my Mulberry stave.  I had to chase down a couple of rings because the back was littered with checks.  Even after going down 2 rings, I am still seeing evidence of the checks in the current ring (although they are very shallow now).

Since the rings were so thick, I had to take off a lot of wood.  I would like some input about what weight I can expect out of what is left. The stave is 59 inches long.  Below are some pictures of what I have left.  I am definitely planning a bend through the handle bow.  I think the widest I can have will be 1 inch wide.

Any ideas on a weight to shoot for?

Thanks,

Mike

Got me a nice ring chased on the back today. Smooth as a baby's bottom.  I am trying to think how to cut the belly off of this for maybe a kid's bow.  There is a whoopty-do in the handle area and some belly checking that might prevent it though.  Superglue is in, and I will think on it for a while.

Well after some setbacks I think I came up with a bow.  I had some twist in the lower limb that I tried removing and ended up up with a check that I had to superglue and clamp.  I then rawhide backed the bow and finished tillering.  The tiller is far from perfect but it shoots nicely.  I'm thinking it's around 45-50#@26" (my scale is giving me problems).  I also included an unbraced pic.

Once an Eagle Scout, always an Eagle Scout!

Missouri, where all the best wood is! Well maybe not the straightest!

Building a bow has been the most rewarding, peaceful, and frustrating things I have ever made with my own two hands!
