PlanB, that stave is starting to look like a bow.

Turtle, I think you are going to be good with that knot.  That is good news it is disappearing on you.

I went back to where I saw the osage the other day and found an offering from the tree. It was a standing dead trunk. The usable section was only 5' long and after splitting it might make a better set of billets, but any osage is good osage in this neck of the woods. This is a first for me but I seldom split osage. There were thorns inside the stave. Check it out.

Wasn't expecting that. I thought they were nails at first. I was quite relieved to say the least.

Hatchet work is done.  Got the profile rough cut, but still need to get it clean up to the layout lines and work around the knots.  Its going to need some heat straightening, the tips are out of alignment about 2 inches.

I laid out the handle symmetrically from the bow centerline, and it is still not completely roughed out, but I am not liking the overall look of the handle and fades.  I think I will bypass my handle layout lines to get it more uniform.  I also plan to heat bend the bow in the handle area to get the tips closer in alignment.

What do you guys think?  Am I going the right direction with the handle?

Loope, it looks like if you moved the lower limb ( the one on the floor in the pic) right at the bend just below the grip hump looks like the tips would line up center of the grip.

I am not there to touch so cant be sure about that but ya could check it with your string. It sure is looking good sir....you must have the patience of Job 8)

Got some more work done today... Not much, but I'm in no hurry. Cut the belly down some more, and smoothed the sides out from the bandsaw cut. One limb is a little bit stiffer then the other.... and they are both still pretty stiff.

I also re built my tillering tree. I've had the pulleys for a while, but just got around to putting it together.

Thanks Rich,

I checked it with a string from tip-to-tip and it looks like a couple inches off the centerline, maybe slightly more.  I had been wondering about bending it right where you mentioned, sounds like that is what I should try.

I'm going to thin the limbs somewhat this weekend, and then be ready to try straightening somewhat.

That is the smart thing to do sir. You may also wish to think about single side string knocks if ya get her real close but she just wont give ya the rest ......you would be surprised how much putting them on opposite side will move a string ....just something to put in your pocket in case she gets a wee bit snippy >:D

Nope, it doesn't! I've never heard of this wood... ever... And it just keeps impressing me.

Dakota, that's pretty interesting-- I wonder if two trunks grew together?
Loope that's a wild stave alright!
