I've seen them too.Don't they really call that a luminar crack.It's a delamination of a growth ring.

I've had that happen with osage too. I draw-knifed all but a few of those checks. Then I slapped on some superglue and clamped the stave.
It is still shooting and I shot it regularly for 3 years.
