Hello to all
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:49:40 pm »
Just recently joined and have been reading the site for a while.
I decided a while back to make my own bows after watching my granddad as a kid. I have made some board bows and am working on one now but I want to build one from a stave. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. My problem is I live in the desert and have no access to good wood.
Just wanted to say there are some beautiful bows you guys make!
Thanks, Calvin

You might be in the wrong end of the state for it, but you shouldn't be TOO far from some osage.  Of course, Texas is kind of a big state...anyway, welcome!

Thanks guys.
Yeah I'm on the opposite end of good Osage.
Have been looking and thought of getting a stave from pinehollowlongbows.
I have bought some stuff from him and have seen good posts about his stuff.

I think Pinehollow has some good hickory staves  it's generally strait grained & knot free ,easy wood to work with and forgiving provoding it's dry , it doesent seem to have as good as cast as other woods but only minimally so, it's very tuff wood I have seen some beautiful bows made out of it. Good luck !

Welcome to PA! Always good to see new guys joining. You can always trade for some staves too, if you have any trade items post it in the trade thread. Anyway, looking forward to seeing some bows. Post pics of those board bows.

Do you have any access to mesquite?  I've got several staves seasoning that's from the great state of Texas.  You might give it a try. Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the site. Good bow wood is worth driving for. Make a weekend out of it and stock up. You'll be glad you did
