Redneck Ramada II
« on: February 23, 2016, 09:58:43 pm »
You guys might remember my fancy Hi Lo camper build from last year.  Well, I traded it for this ugly boat trailer a couple of months ago.  I could see the potential in it even though most other people couldn't.  My goal is to have a rustic looking tear drop shaped camper tall enough to stand up in without hitting our head.  I want this thing to look like an old shed rolling down the road.  It will have a wood storage area under the bed frame.  This is a rough sketch of what I want to build.

My new burgundy beauty!

The tires had some dry rot cracks which made me a little nervous.  I found a good deal on some almost new tires plus a spare.  Next up was to convert the V frame to a flat bed.  I got some 1/4" x 2" angle iron and started welding.  I made the flat bed 13' long.

I ground off any rust that I could see.

A coat of primer and 2 coats of flat black covered up that horrible burgundy color.

Once I got the deck down it looked totally different than when I started.  The axles are farther back than a normal trailer but I think that will actually work out better when I'm fully loaded.

Today I started on the camper.  I did a lot of measuring and thinking trying to come up with a good side profile.  This is what I came up with.  The more I look at it the less I like the slope down to the back.  I want to take the angle farther up towards the front.  I'll draw some lines on it and see if I can make it any better.  I don't want to lose any head room in the open part of the camper.

Can't wait to see the mkII That trailer looks good and solid and it will be interesting to see how you put in everything you learned from mk1.

Good luck, Clint! Though, based on your past projects, good planning will be utilized fully and little reliance on luck necessary.   8)

Thanks guys.  I've spent the last 2 months planning this thing out in my head.  I've got an idea of what I want it to look like.  Now I just need to make it happen.  The weather will affect how much time I get to work on it.

That is cool Clint, I have an old boat trailer. Maybe it's time for a makeover. I look forward to your take on this project.

Don't forget to load it up with osage. I'll help you unload it at Pappy's, again.
