Primitive yew ELB
« on: July 01, 2016, 09:04:27 am »
Hey guys, this is a yew bow I made about 5 years ago. Never finished it, cause of a big knot in the handle area made it really bulky and stiff. Pulled it out last week, rasped most of the knot away, retillerd a little. Scraped it and gave her a few of rubs of Danish oil.

Looks good, is that a yew branch? It looks like the knots face every direction

Pretty bow....the bottom 2/3 of that top limb are a little stiff.  Bottom limb looks good.

DC it's from a 2 1/4 " sapling. The knots do go everywhere. You can just see the pith for about an inch in the handle. The hinge is just a kink where some deflex  was naturally. You can see it in the unbraced photo. Ajooter thanks, I thought that too after seeing pics but it shoots fine.☺

Nice job on that!
Really like the character that the knots give to most Yew Staves.

Thanks knotty! I've never had the chance to work a nice clean stave from a big diameter yew. All of my yew is 3-5 inch stuff, most full of knots. You get lots of character out of them.

I sure like the looks of these small diameter knotty yew. It is primitive! And it speaks to the nature of yew and how it just wants to be a bow.
"The bow is the old first lyre,
the mono chord, the initial rune of fine art
The humanities grew out from archery as a flower from a seed
No sooner did the soft, sweet note of the bow-string charm the ear of genius than music was born, and from music came poetry and painting and..." Maurice Thompso
