Big ol' honkin' jungle arrow
« on: March 05, 2008, 08:00:43 pm »
I was playing around and made this sucker just for the helluvit. It's about 50"  long, about 700 grains, made from river cane with quickee two-feather fletching and a dogwood point. I didn't take too many pains with it, but surprisingly, it flies great and is quite accurate. I shot it a few times from a long 50# ash flatbow and at 15 yards it's point-on. At twenty it's still accurate, but drops a bit more than a normal arrow. No wagging or porpoising. I expected it to nose-dive or flit around like a drunken bat, but it flies true. It hits the target bag with a sound resembling a dead cow being whacked in the paunch with a go-devil. The first shot a fifteen yards went all the way through the eternity target bag with the point sticking out the other side.  :o Now all I need is to get within range of a monkey......I may have to make some more of these and a seven-foot jungle bow to shoot them with. That would be a lot of fun, take 'em to a 3D shoot with the wheelie guys and their overdraws and 23" arrows.  ;D

That's pretty darn cool; i especially like that dogwood point. I like your sound effects description.  Looks like you might need to get on that airboat of eddies and shoot down some of dem invasive simians ;D

Jonathan, I got plenty of invasive hairy simian cousins infesting the hollers around here.  ;D And don't tell me you've never whacked a dead cow in the paunch with a go-devil  ;D

Oh, a Maul. ::) A Go Devil down here is a motor for duck boats that cost too much for me to justify.

That is a cool arrow.  You might have to get a new quiver though.  :o Justin

Cool arrow Steve. Lots of the South American "long" monkey arrows don't have fletchings. Have you tried shooting a long unfletched arrow?     Pat

freakin awesome dude  ;D  i love that arrow.  i meant to make some for the longest time, (with bamboo heads), but i just don't seem to find the time.  or maybe i've got my priorities all wrong.

coincidently, right now there's a thread on one of the german forums discussing the advantages and dynamics of long unfletched jungel arrows.

Thanks, guys, it's fun to experiment with wierd stuff sometimes. Pat, I bet it would fly fine without the fletchings, especially if it had a heavier point on it. I'm thinking about making a couple of big long cane fish arrows with no fletchings.
