Some target arrows for warbow
« on: March 25, 2017, 08:35:39 am »
Here's some target arrows I've just finished, 3/8" tulip poplar with tapered buffalo ox horn inserts, type 10 arrowheads and a 6" shield profile fletchings with rounded off trailing edges. They all weigh 53g-53.5g.  They have a low foc of 8or9% so don't know how they will perform, they are a bit of an experiment.

Nice!  Fletching is wrapped down with thread?

Hi Hawkdancer, the fletchings are glued in place, then bound with red silk, then the silk whipping is sealed in with 3or4 coats of pva and when that's dry a coat of Danish oil on top of the pva to make it waterproof.

very nice workmanship.

please let us know how they fly. Is 8-9% considered low for FOC on warbow arrows?  Fletching drag seems to play a part in the FOC equation, and with 6", I am thinking you should be OK.

Will do Willie, (maybe more like 7 after recalculation finished arrow)  hopefully next weekend if all going to plan. I've only shot lighter arrows similar to these but with a lower spine with heavier heads(long type 10, the longer and heavier version of these arrowheads) off a lighter 100@31 bow...they flew well but the foc was greater. These arrows are spined around 115 and I'm shooting a 125@31, I'm hoping with the lighter heads they won't be too whippy, I got a good feeling they will be ok, how good will be all trial and error and just trying for a good 3/8" target arrow rather than the usual 1/2" shaft tapering to 3/8" at the nock.
FOC is a relatively new concept for me and something I'm starting to consider more. Anyway, as soon as I can I'll post how they perform.
(I think in general most warbow arrows by design have a high foc for penetration, save for flight arrows.)

They look good, bet they'll shoot fine  :)
That's plenty heavy enough!

Thanks Del,
And thanks for the advice regarding that,  I'm glad they came out heavier than expected.  8)

Those look great Ruddy, they should really make a thump when they hit the target. It's a shame you guys can't hunt with your bows, I bet we'd get some great hunting stories from across the pond

Thanks BJrogg, I'd probably drop the bow weight if I could hunt around this way.  :D
