totem pole
« on: July 23, 2017, 08:20:17 pm »
Anyone ever make a totem pole? I had a good size Lombardy Poplar come down in a recent storm. It was blocking the driveway so I cut it up. Saved a straight section about six foot long. Stripped the bark and sealed up the ends. I am hoping to make a "Mini" totem pole out of it for the cabin. I am looking for ideas or pictures.
Thank you,
Brian

A good friend on ours has carved some of the figure heads but never a totem pole.
I think DC has you set up with ideas. Looking forward to seeing the results.

I could drive around town and take some pictures but they wouldn't be any better than the link. We have some very talented carvers here. We have a chainsaw carving contest every year and the First Nations carvers get involved in that.

This is what I came up with. Not very elaborate and certainly not anywhere near the quality of the ones in the links sent, I kept it very simple for my first attempt. Attached is a picture of it by my Grandson's and my lean to shelter back in the woods. The meanings of the symbols are: Owl = wisdom, Bear= strength, Turtle = self reliance, Deer = Compassion, Dragon Fly = ever changing life. The borders are orange fall leaves (60 total for 60 years I have been alive). Fun project. Interestingly, last night there were several owls who were very vocal just outside of the cabin.
Take care,
Brian

Brian,
Very COOL! pics!
 The lean-to looks great!
I think I could spend a week in it just relaxing.
I like the totem pole, I learned a lot, especially impressed with dragon fly's good trait= ever changing life.
