blackthorn advice please, new question
« on: August 04, 2017, 05:52:39 am »
Morning.
I am working on a blackthorn billet bow, currently 77" ttt and 1" wide at the centre. I was hoping for a heavy longbow but there is a knot complex 10" from the tip causing me some concerns - it is noticeably weaker than the rest of the stave, and kicks the tip into deflex and a little sideways. In fact the stave has no movement in it yet, except for this section. If I stick to the taper I have plotted, the knot will be on the corner of the bow, what would you do?
the section in question

and a sideview

the knot in question

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Leave extra width at the knot. The amount of extra width as the size of the knot. You could try using dry heat to bend it sideways and correct the deflex there.

Good news is I got the bow tillered out to 26", bad news, to balance out the weak point, the draw weight is down to 35#at 25". So, I'd like to raise the draw weight by about 10# (I'd like 60# at 28") but if I do try, will this stress the weak point now that the rest of the bow is tillered? Is piking or heat treating likely to be a waste of time, or worth trying just in case?

Post a photo with it drawn back to 25?
Maybe make a new post in the bows section, a little more traffic over there.
