conservation varnish on osage,,, pics
« on: September 19, 2017, 06:37:35 pm »
ok I am working on a bow for a student,, just a light bow to teach form,, so I looked in my staves and picked one that was probably not gonna make a hunting bow,,it had some checking issues that I felt needed a linen wrap,, gonna leave that part stiff and whip tiller a bit,,
got it roughed out and strung,, still to heavy ,, its 30# at about 21inches and I am going for about 25 to 30# at 26,,,
as I worked on the bow,, it got more and more beautiful, and the color of the wood was really nice,, so I thought well I will just put a bit of finish on it,, it will make it easier to see the file marks and where I need to sand,,,,
I had some conservation varnish that I use for paintings on hand,, and sprayed some on,, wow, the wood was glowing,,
I dont think it would hold up to hunting conditions,, but it sure is pretty,, and a coat of varathane would beef it up,,,
as you guys know,, I am always amazed at the beauty of osage, ,and just wanted to share this bow gleaming in the sunlight,,

Krylon gallery series   conservation varnish,,,, I think I got it at hobby loby,,, I think it would work nice as a sealer coat for art work on a bow,,

Looks good enough to eat!

your right,, I just love that osage color,, this stuff has uv protection in it,, so I am wondering if it will hold the light color a bit longer

Nice!  Should make an excellent seal over artwork - that's what it is supposed to do. The uv screen should be bolstered by the finish, for a while, anyway.  I will have to try it on the Osage from Badger, got a couple of ideas for decorating.

Brad, I know what you mean about the colors of osage ...
I'm always wondering should I leave it, age it, fume it ...
Osage looks always good. But you're right we should test out a lot more of finishes and what you did here looks really nice.

Oh, and btw. the bow is a looker for sure! Will make someone happy!

Nice color AND nice bow! And I agree with Simon, osage looks just as good fresh as it does dark and aged! Too bad osage is more expensive than gold here :'(
