First buckskin
« on: November 06, 2017, 08:35:50 pm »
Ive done a few deer hides into rawhide. Been wanting to tan and smoke one. I picked one that had a lot of knife marks and figured had nothing to lose if it didn't turn out. I decided on soap and oil instead of brains. Softened most by hand over a cable and finished on a frame. Smoked hour each side. Im happy with it for my first. Look forward to trying again. I like camp fire smell but these are very potent for  first few days!

Nice job!  Now you can try a prime hide!  A few hands full of safe might give a good smell, so read out over the smoking time.  Takes about 2 -3 deer hides for a shirt, if I remember right.

What soap and oil formula did you use!  I got cooked brains in the freezer, but I don't dare thaw them in the microwave >:D!

NICE, Mr Paul.
