Plains Style Bow
« on: November 22, 2017, 03:02:52 pm »
This little plains style bow nearly got binned when it was a bit longer but I persevered and after I cut the nasty bits off it was much more keen to be a bow. It's yew heartwood made from a branch I cut from a friends backyard one evening last summer with Del Cat. He made a rather wonderful 100lb ELB from some billets he got from the trip and I went pretty much the polar opposite. Lots of heat straightening needed initially. Still doen't line up perfectly through the handle when unbraced but surprisingly good when braced now.

Specs are 45" ntn, just a smidge over 40# at 22". It has 2 courses of sinew (and wrapped tips and mid limb) with a horse hair tassel. Handle is trade cloth with rawhide binding (my favorite handle style) and the string is 12 stands of red Dacron. Finished with a bit of paint over 3 coats of Danish oil and a linwax waterproofing. Gives me a little warm feeling and that's all you can ask really :0)

I agree I will eventually make a sinew one when I've stopped sticking it on the back of everything in sight :0)
