Something from Jeb
« on: March 22, 2018, 05:39:04 pm »
Jeb gave me some of this last year. I think it's rainbow Obsidian. This was a broken piece laying on the floor not much bigger around than this point. It was much fatter though with not that great of angles. Really wasn't expecting much. This piece surprised me.

Thanks Bill and Jerry. Funny how sometimes I pick up a piece and think, man I'm gonna get a nice blade or spear point and then I can't do anything right and ruin it. Much nicer when you pick up a piece you don't think is going to work and get surprised.

Nice point BJ!
Let the sun reflect off of it, if it is rainbow you will see all the colors through the point, If it doesn't show any colors it might be like black lace obsidian.

Thanks everyone
Redhand I just call it some real nice Obsidian that Jeb gave me. It looks Black until you hold up to light then you can almost see right through it. Whatever it is I like it.

Zuma my Uncle used that expression all the time. I can still here him saying " you can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear" he was a good uncle.

BJ, real nice lookin point and obsidian can be so transluscent, always nice to get a point on a pc that is just so-so. When I first started knapping I always picked out the nice flat tri angle looking stuff first, thru all the square blocks in a bucket. Soon out of easy stuff and start on the blocks, My personal knapping improved once you start trying to make something out of the odd pcs. Looks like you are well on your way :KN :KN Bob

Thanks Outback, I agree completely on the odd difficult pieces improving my knapping. Didn't take long when I started to turn all my nice stuff into gravel. When I started turning gravel into points I started to get the hang of it. Don't know if I'd of figured it out with out the odd stuff. Sure wasn't going to keep buying rock to learn with all good stuff.lol. Still hard for a farm boy to pay money for rocks.

Nice one, Brian and looks sharp, too. I know what Bob is talking about. I was working in Texas once and bored to tears. I had a pressure flaker in the truck, found a chunk of river rock for a hammer stone and scrounged a couple of small pieces of chert in the parking lot. I ended up with two really nice points just trying to get something out of the two marginal rocks I found.
