Latest find while shed hunting.
« on: April 24, 2018, 09:26:53 am »

Figure it's around a 4 to 5 year old 8 point buck with good mass.Robin found him around a block away from the house. She always gets lucky that way.Course I put her in areas with the biggest chance too.It makes her day along with mine.Pretty sure he died in late december or early january sometime.

Well, yank the head and hang it in a tree, its almost a european mount now. Then a pressure washer and some bleach....

These horns go on the porch rail along with the rest of them as they are so Robin and me and anyone else can look at them any time.Away from the mice.No special treatment.Trying to pressure wash that old dried hard face hide would do more harm than good.I don't use bleach either on my european head mounts.
When I put one down with the self or composite bows they get the special treatment.
I'm pretty sure he died from a gun wound just after gun season from next door property.

Well nothing lives forever. You bet the darn rodents will get them.We are'nt done covering all the ground yet looking for sheds. There's more dead deer laying around out there than people realize. It's been that way though for years and years.

He looks like he was a proud one Ed. Nice Robin found him before the mice. Must not have as many coyotes as we do or he'd be drug around and spread out. I'd guess the same as you, probably during gun season. Definitely before he shed that fine head gear.

He sure was a nice one, Ed. I'd be happy to find one like that.

If I remember correctly I did see him during the rut.It just never worked out getting a shot.A theme that happened more than once during the hunting season.I did get him within 30 yards once.Another one bigger came that close too but was missing 1 half of his rack already in november. This one died far enough away from the trees the squirrels did'nt find him I guess.
Many times the bones are scattered all over the place too.Robin has a habit of picking those up too.She puts them in her flower garden.

Yes getting a shot during hunting season would have been nice.I try to count and recognize the bucks I see during hunting season.

I have been doing pretty good in Fayette county Pennsylvania. I ended up finding a pretty good one the last day of late archery season to add to a pretty nice collection from the last couple years here. I seen the buck three times before finding his shed 20yrds from my stand.

Cool.Nice deer.We hang them on the porch rail. There's a fella near me selling shed hunting labradors too.
I have to compete with some of the Amish here who shed hunt themselves.Their nuts for those sheds.
