Sheaths
« on: May 08, 2018, 02:27:07 pm »
Besides the standard leather anyone making and from deer hide? I was thinking of lining it cow or groundhog rawhide to protect it from the knife. I will be tanning two deer hides soon and want to use my own kill for the sheath. I don't have cows I can kill and oak bark to do the vegetable tanning. I was thinking of shaping the raw hide wet to the knife and then making a deer hide sheath that held the liner.

You can definitely use deer hide with a rawhide liner, or you can just use rawhide I have seen some killer rawhide sheaths
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I gave up and went with a real leather scrap, at least for now.

Looks pretty darn functional to me!  You are the main critic.  A deer skin over sheath would look pretty good, I think.

Quebracho vegetable tan makes a thick tanned deer hide. I had a hard time getting it to come out good but a friend could make really nice deer leather with it.

Here is the bare knife.

I would like to try some deer vegetable tanned but not sure of the best way to do it.
