Sinew Backed Osage Plains Bow and Quiver.
« on: May 09, 2018, 02:22:28 pm »
I Made this set for a buddy of mine who lives in Florida(seminolewind). The leather for the quiver and bow case was tanned by yours truly from a mule deer I had harvested a few years back. He told me he didn't want any beading done. Well I snuck some on the bone handled knife sheath. Since I couldn't do any bead work I added some abalone and two full ermine skins for decoration. The strap is backed with red flannel to prevent curling and excessive stretching.

The Bow is Osage Orange 58" nock to nock and just over an inch wide. 2 solid layers of elk leg sinew.
On a good dry day she pulls 67#@30" and on a really humid day 64#@30"
I gave this bow a 1/4" positive tiller and balances in the hand nicely. The handle just starts to flex in the last few inches of draw. Thick rawhide was used to build up the handle and still allow it to flex while still being able to hold comfortably while shooting.
The whole bow is really only made up of two rings.
Backed with some rattler skins and finished off with 9 coats of tru-oil, buffed and rubbed down with medium then fine course pumice for a flawless finish, and something I'm happy to send to a friend who plans to hunt deer in Virginia.

All I had to do was read your description and I knew we'd be in for a treat. What an amazing package. Your friend will be blown away!   (W

So Bryce do you just extend a little sinew off the back to attatch the horse hair on the tip to?

Thanks gentlemen

So Bryce do you just extend a little sinew off the back to attatch the horse hair on the tip to?

The sinew actually stops a little ways before the curves. I cut out a slot in the end and laid the ends of the hair inside. So there wouldn’t be a little lump under the skin. Then wrapped and glued the base of the tuff so it would stay up and together.
