Handle question
« on: June 19, 2018, 01:50:56 pm »
Hi

I am going to make a flat bow with a none bending handle.  I was wondering what width of handle and what depth of handle people would suggest for Hazel, Ash or Elm ? I am planning on having a 2" long handle and 2" long fades.  Overall bow length will be 2 x  30" working limbs with 8" for handle and fades so 68" in total length.  Would you guys go with 2" wide limbs or less for a target draw weight of 50lb @ 28"?

Thanks

Yeah  go 2" wide at the fades, if it starts to get to thin you can side tiller it
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

1"-1.25" is a comfy width for most. I start my depth at 2" and by the time I have it shaped and worked down most will be about 1.625-1.75" deep.

... alone in distant woods or fields, in unpretending sproutlands or pastures tracked by rabbits, even in a bleak and, to most, cheerless day .... .  I suppose that this value, in my case, is equivalent to what others get by churchgoing & prayer.  Hank Thoreau, 1857

I make bulbus handles that are 1" wide at the arrow pass and 1 1.4" at the palm swell, very comfortable. I make them abut 1 1/2" tall.

As long as it's not so shallow it starts to bend, make it so it's comfortable to you. I like mine a bit more shallow at 1-3/8" deep
