Old Japanese Yumi Bows

 Here's something a little different, antique Yumi bows. One will still shoot and one is a very old Wall Hanger.
these bows along with the arrows were gifted to me by my senior Black Belt. I'm guessing the plain bamboo bow is around the turn of the century and the black lacquer bow is from the Edo period, the last of the Samurai's. Both bows are a little over 7' in length and the newer one has a very thin hemp string and feels like it's around 40-45 lbs. They are bamboo back and belly and about an inch wide.

Very different for sure,i cant imagine shooting a bow that long.

Has the black one got a recurve on one end? If so has it taken a lot of set or was it made with deflex? It's confusing me :)

Awesome.  I never shot one.  What’s your impression?  I would think they would shoot smooth as butter.

The black bow is hanging with the Back facing down. I had to watch a video before I could string it. It was glued up with the curves you see. Pat I took the hat from my Props closet.

Howard, I haven't shot it yet. I'm still reading my Kyudo book to see exactly how. It's like starting karate all over. I don't have it pulled back all of the way in the picture, about another six inches to go. But it does draw smooth.

Wow nice gift!
I really would like to try this shooting style and bow! Is it true you stick it in the ground in the kneeing position?
I'm a bit jealous cause I love Japan and their culture!

No, it's not true. When I kneel it is about a foot off the ground. The lower limb is not that long.
