I had a stave that barely seemed fit for firewood. A friend had thrown it into a trade years ago and it just sat around. I even cut a chunk out of one end for a tip overlay or knife scale or something. It was riddled with drying checks and didn't have much meat to it. I finally decided to chase a ring on it and see what it had to offer. Given that it was osage I shouldn't have been too surprised. It had a flawless back with no knots or checks. the belly had a fair amount of checks but I wasn't worried about that. The main thing I didn't like about the stave was the cracks along the edges. They looked like delaminations. Thankfully they were very superficial and when I reduced the width down' to bow dimensions they disappeared.

It was definitely one of those bows where you have to just work with whatever the stave gives you. I was pleased to discover that this stave had such a solid, stout bow in it. It came out to 56#@28". The bow is 63" long ntn. I used a combination of steelwool/vinegar stain and some leather dye on the tips. To go with the unique nature of the wood I used a piece of elk leather for the handle that had some scarring on it. This made the leather take the stain inconsistently which gave a unintended but cool rugged appearance to the handle wrap.

That bow looks like it has been around awhile like it could tell stories.really like those kind of bows

I love those "redemption" bows, taking a junk stave and finding the gold inside.
