Just wondering...
« on: February 26, 2019, 10:34:54 am »
I was pondering about taking some extra bows to this flight shoot in May (as back up, in case of unforseen problems), so I tested some of my flight bows to see what the draw length was at 50# ('Cos I'll shoot in the not exceeding 50# class).

I have one ELB (il Bastardo) that is short and brutal, about 90# at 30". It comes to about 50# at 16" draw (measured to belly).
Now what I'm wondering is how far it would shoot a tiny 16" flight arrow which would be lovely and aerodynamic being so short.
I could make up one to try it, but this is just some armchair experimentation  ::) (yes I've got enough flight arrows to make already).
I did try an old 24" flight from a short draw and it pinged out nicely.
Any thoughts, comments...?

BTW. The hide with hair on that I bought does seem to give a nice slick loose :)

There have been flight records set using very heavy bows with short draws and tiny arrow before, so it can work. The difficult part is that the tuning of the arrow to the bow has to be perfect. This is especially true if the bow has a wide handle to clear. I say go for it!

Cheers, I happen to have inadvertently created an almost complete suitably short flight arrow ::)
I'll give it a go. Hope to do some testing on Sunday if the weather is suitable.

I happened upon that article about two weeks ago. Great story!

Yup, nicely written story and informative...
I'll definitely give il Bastardo a go with a tiny arrow.
BTW il Bastardo was heat treated in the Autumn and hasn't been shot since.
My mate JT who shoots it was over yesterday so he strung it and gave it a tentative pull... the look on his face was priceless! It's probably only about 90# @28" but the weight is there from the first inch and it's brutal (hence the name).
He simply declared "never mind the safety glasses it's a crash hat job"  ;D
