What can you use to clean oily woods besides Acetone.

When I do sinew backed bows I use Dawn dish soap, scrub with warm water and rinse with boiling water. If you are just gluing a wood back to the bow I just give both glue surfaces a good sanding brush off the dust and butter both surfaces with glue.

Back when I thought it was necessary I used a dilute lye solution on osage. After reading the Dean Torges writings on the subject and his finding that it wasn't necessary on American woods I quit degreasing 20 years ago and haven't had a failure since. I do tooth the glue surface for backing and sinew.

We did all of our very early bows the same with lye.  That was just accepted as necessary.
