Bamboo shafts
« on: May 01, 2019, 12:52:27 pm »
Here's one that hasn't been asked; does anyone know where to get some bamboo shafts in the 40" range? I need some arrows for my 7' 6" Yumi bow. The ones I'm shooting now are over a hundred years old and I've broke one already. So, I want to make my own so I don't end up destroying the set. I don't think I can come by any now with Japanese Sea Eagle feathers.
I've found Tonkin on line but they are expensive and mismatched weights. I'm also looking for carbons in the same length.

Contact Japp Koppedrayer at Yumi Bows, he sells the proper shafting that he grows himself. Be prepared to get off your wallet but his stuff is topnotch.

He used to set up booth at The Hill shoot and sell bows, bow building materials and shafting as well as give demonstrations on building and shooting a yumi bow complete with all the ritual.

I've talked to Jaap on Facebook. been holding out looking for a cheaper alternative. I do have a place to buy arrows for $45 a piece. Jaap only lives a few hours from me and I might have to make a road trip and drop by and see him.

I order bamboo shafts from China.  They are available in several different lengths.  Excellent quality.  I could PM you with their email address if you are interested.

Eddie, I'd be happy to cut some hill cane for you if that would work.

you may not want cane but I have some dried that may work.
The raw shafts are slightly larger than 3/8" but less than 7/16"
The straightened shafts are 7/16" atlatl dart shafts.
These are ones I picked out that have a slow taper rate and are larger on the small end than the average piece of cane from round here so I they should be stiffer for longer length arrows.

If you are willing to part with four or six of the straightened ones I'd be happy to trade something. I'm kind of experimentint to see what I can make work. It's hard for me to pay around $60 a piece for arrows.

I have loads of dwarf bamboo we use for arrows here in Taiwan. Damn near invincible. The spine the aboriginals use here is very low. I do not have any lower spined shafts right now and hate trying to spine boo. It is a serious hassle, but I could ask some local guys if they've got any extra low spined shafts. We normally pick them in the late fall near the top of the front range of mountains. About 1km up. The higher stuff is better to a point. I have fields of them at my disposal, but it is always hard to know the spine before it dries. To be honest, I'd just as soon pay someone to do it for me. There was a guy on one of the FB primitive archery groups selling spined shafts. Seemed pretty reasonable.

I made up some arrows with the bamboo shafts from China lately, they are just about like carbons in consistency but my 55-60 shafts were as little less than 5/16" on one end and almost exactly 5/16" on the other, the weights for a 28" arrow with a 125 gr tip was around 460 gr.
