West Coast Style Bow
« on: July 11, 2019, 06:51:04 pm »
Sinew backed hickory that is 50 inches nock to nock, and 37 lbs, at 20 inches shooting it Ishi's way .Three under it will be 45lbs. at 24 inches. The pinch finger style those natives shot their bows takes some real practice, and shooting the arrow from right side feels really strange.See Billy  Berger on utube shooting Isha's way.

Bassman i am really liking these bows you have been putting out lately.  In horseback archery we shoot off the right side of the bow frequently.  Takes some getting used to for sure.

Lovely lil bow. Congrats!
What material is wrapped around limb in the section leading up to tips?
... alone in distant woods or fields, in unpretending sproutlands or pastures tracked by rabbits, even in a bleak and, to most, cheerless day .... .  I suppose that this value, in my case, is equivalent to what others get by churchgoing & prayer.  Hank Thoreau, 1857

Knoll,it is sinew. The bow is made from Hickory with sinew backing, and heat treated belly. The glue is Tb3 for the sinew so I could paint directly over it with Acrylic paint ,and then seal it with shellac.I used white Rabbit fur for the silencers. It has 2 inches of induced reflex. Could have gotten more using hide glue.  Natives such as the Hupa ,Wintu Karok,Yurok used Juniper mostly with hide Glue.It has been said  that they used 1 third sinew, and 2 thirds Juniper for the thickness of the bows. They strung their bows backwards ,and then sinewed them. Their bows had more like 4 to 5 inches of reflex, and had a lot of spring. They were real craftsmen when it came to making bows, and arrows, but their method of shooting takes a lot of practice, and I am not very good at it yet.

Very nice Bob. I like the way you incorporated the shooting style to reflect the type of bow you crafted. That's a neat little bow.

Thanks Steve. Always wanted to build one of these ,and try their shooting style. It is really an unorthodox way of shooting for me, but worked well for them.
