How short can I go on ELB
« on: August 15, 2019, 03:23:39 am »
Hello everyone I have been really wanting to build an ELB and I wanted to know how short I can make it while still being able to call it an ELB. I don’t plan on making it heavy in weight at most maybe 60# @28” I plan on making it out of white out backed ipe or maybe a tri-laminate. I want to take a break from what I traditionally make. I don’t really have much experience with ELB but they seem easier to build( If I am wrong please forgive me as I am ignorant on this subject). I am not even sure if ipe would be a good choice for this type of bow so if you have an opinion on that please share it.

Opinions and definitions vary, but a reasonable length is to have it as tall as the archer or up to their eye level.
70" ntn gives a nice manageable length that will still cope with a decent weight and decent draw length.
Some definitions suggest 66" for draw lengths over 27".
Don't make it longer than the stave  ;)

(lol) I won’t I promise. I love your videos by the way. I just now looked back at your videos and saw that you have done a triple laminate. Looks really pretty thanks for the reply.

In Aug/Sept 2017 issue of Primitive Archer Magazine, there is an article by Hugh Soar, featuring short Welsh warbow, built by Jeremy Spencer(http://warbowwales.com/), that measures 1258 mm, or just over 49''.
Hope that helps.

I am holding in my hand a 55# white oak backed ipe right now about 64" long for a 28" draw. I have a very slight hinged area so will be dropping it to 45#. I would prefer about 67" for the bow you describe.

This bow here is 15/16, I roughed it out at 1". I would go a full 1" for 60# using ipe as a belly.

I’ve essentially been running with double the draw and add 10”. It seems to work pretty well and gives a little room to trim the tips down if your either under weight or the bow seems to be under performing.

You can get buffalo horn from the pet store as dog chews.
Not the most economical price but convenient if you’re only trying out that style of bow knock.
