30 caliber Bullet lodged in the middle of an Oak sapling.
« on: September 12, 2019, 08:23:30 am »
The split went good, but in the middle of the splits was a long crack with some funky looking wood.I cut knots out of the one stave ,and got a 52 inch bow, but still had some of the crack  in the belly. The other stave had a clean back so I roughed out a 62 inch bow with a large crack in the center. When I started reducing the riser I found a 30 caliber bullet lodged in the wood. I can still get 2 bows out of the sapling. The bullet is lodged right in the middle of the riser, and I have enough wood to chase the crack out of the 62 inch  bow. Crazy stuff happens.

I have been working on that Osage sapling you gave me Will. So far it is kicking my arse. Knots, twists, punky wood. I am waiting for the sucker to go boom on the tiller tree.

I bet that 30 cal bow, will pack more of a punch, than a 223 cal bow.

I think he hit the deer by the looks of the bullet. Did that once with a muzzle through a deer.

Interesting stave you have Bob. Hope you get a bow from it.

Well I tried taking the riser down past the crack, and it was all rotted. So much for that bow. I saved the limbs.V splice with a handle cover later on.

I have tested many different  bullets that are on the market today in my younger days. I ran tests shooting hand loads from various rifles ,and different bullet weights at 100 yds through wet telephone books testing for bullet weight retention ,and expansion. The wet telephone  book would let you retrieve the bullet, and check the results. That bullet weighed 140 grs on my powder scale. Most likely it was a 150 gr bullet. Good bullet weight retention, and good expansion. A direct hit to that sapling could have easily caused that much expansion. Nosler Partition bullets that I retrieved from the telephone book showed way more expansion than that, and even core separation. Any how good bow making.
