Finally finished the celt I have been working on. :P  I had alot of fun doing it and earned a greater appreciation for working paleo.    I'll give a brief description of the steps, in case someone is interested.  1st) felled a small tree with a quartzite hand axe.  2nd) chopped off the length I wanted.  3rd) picked a river stone to peck and grind.  4th) started the hole for the head by using an antler chisel and hammerstone.  5th) started to burn the hole out with coals   6th) coated the areas I did not want to burn through with clay.  7th) burned to the right size and grinded with tools  8th) cut handle with tools.  9th) inserted head       10th) tryed it out on a small tree.      Look forward to making a paleo bow in the future. :)

Thanks Everyone.  Eddie, I'm embarrassed to admit how long it took; especially since I could only work on it an hour here and there.  The youngin is great. :)

very cool. to be on the safe side wrap the area around the celt with wet rawhide so it constricts the wood so it doesnt split. the cutting angle of the head will fell a tree but should be a bit shallower. sure is a lot of work though and you did great. peace

Thanks Jamie.    When I tested it out on a tree a hairline crack started and I put on some groundhog rawhide (from a failed bowstring) and sealed with some pine pitch.  I will definitely get that angle better and ideally choose a bigger head.

Great looking celt, Jonathan. That pecking and grinding is a lot of fun, ain't it?  ::) I've got a couple greenstone ones partially done if I can ever get myself back to working on them.

thanks.     yeah, i like to peck and grind; though i ruined about 3 before knowing when to stop...i sure wish i could get hold of some of that va. greenstone ;D

very impressive accomplishment.  congrats dingleberry.  by the way, how do you pronounce that?  is it "tselt" or more like "kelt"?

 Thanks Marius. I think it's pronounced "tselt" but I don't know for certain.
