Fill a knot or not?

I started shaping this handle today and what looked like a fairly solid knot turned into a 1" deep hole angling through the upper fade.  My two thoughts are to leave it empty or to fill it with dyed epoxy.  I think there is enough wood around it to be stable.  I shot it today but I can't draw anywhere near 29".  What do you guys think?




Here is the other end of it.  I wish it was hollow all the way through.  I'd leave it empty for sure then.

How straight is the hole? You could drill it out and plug it with something if you didn’t want to use epoxy.

I dont want to plug it with wood or horn.  I'd rather use epoxy with some color in it.

I think you could fill it then. Depends more on the aesthetic that you want.

I was thinking dark red dye with black swirled into it.  Or maybe solid black with a thin blue line across it.  The guy I'm making it for was the son of a police chief before he was killed.

A buddy of mine just finished up a bow this week with a hole like that . He filled it with a piece of polished turquoise.

Like that shooter riser. Make a good "hang from tree hook" hunter!

I would not fill it with just two part exoxy. Would fit some dark or black wood, Gaboon etc and fit it.  Then epoxy that in. It's in a spot where you have relieved half the bow where you will get some flex thru the upper fade and vibration. Fitting a piece with a smaller amount of epxoy and wood will be much stronger in a tricky spot.

It may have helped if you left some meat on the top fade and not trimmed down. That wood on the opposite of the arrow pass would have gone a long way to support that area. Looking at the grian in that spot i see it swirls and waves so it should be strong enough. If it does come apart right there it gets purty ugly.

Osage saw dust, and crazy glue will make that hole strong.Pack it in their ,let it dry ,and sand it down. I have used that fix on a lot of bows with excellent results.

I use sawdust and superglue to fill inletting errors on flintlocks that won't show as well as gaps in other wood work, it makes and exceptionally strong patch after the chemical reaction takes place between the wood and glue, don't breathe the fumes, they are nasty.
