Southern Mountain Rifle

I have started an new rifle, A Southern mountain rifle in 45 caliber. It is being stocked in walnut from a slab and has an A weight swamped Gain Twist in 45 caliber from Colerain.  I love these Southern style rifles.




Barrel channel is chiseled in.



Ramrod channel is done

Starting to slim up. Still way over sized but I saved many hours in about three minutes on the band saw.

Shaped the tang and installed the breech plug and inlet it all. Now I can thin the wrist area and inlet the lock!

Got the barrel lugs dovetailed and installed and the barrel pinned. Inlet the lock plate today and reduced the lock panel some, still a little proud at the nose of the lock. Soon I will reduce and shape the lock panels.

Starting to look right. If I do my part, this little dandy is going to New Mexico the end of August on an antelope hunt.

Lock is in and ready to bolt. Then its the triggers.

Lock and tang bolt in and tapped. Ready for the touch hole liner and trigger guard.
