I have made hundreds of them, 6" is the most usable length. Some folk make them shorter, I have made a few shorter but always go back to the 6" ones.

I use a 6 inch Gizmo along with a 4 inch piece of wood with a screw through the middle that will scratch the wood were it  needs to come off the belly. One will work better than the other at times.

You can turn the stave to the light, and see all the scratch marks ,and pencil them.

The Gizmo design made by Eric has been proven to be a good wood bow building and tillering device by many bow builders. I have one of Eric's Gizmos that I use and find it to be a very helpful tool. Folks have been using their scrapers or a 6" ruler to show the variation in in bends for years now but Eric's design has one added feature, the adjustable pencil that shows you where to remove wood for a consistent bend.

No doubt about that , but the scraper will tell how how deep to take the wood off in certain tight places which has been and additional aid to me any how.

I like giving credit where credit is due. Eric has been very generous with his Gizmo not only with folks here but donates lots to support
St Jude's Children's Hospital.

I give him all the credit in the world. The scraper deal is just some thing I mentioned in case some one may want to try it to see if it also helps them. Never a knock on Eric. Was not my purpose of mentioning the scraper. The scraper is what I used until I found out about Eric's Gizmo. Then I quickly built one, and use it a lot but, I still use the scraper at times  along with the Gizmo.If you are happy with just using the Gizmo that is great, and it is a great tool for tillering.

I have 15 gizmos up for bids on the Trad Gang St Jude auction right now. The bidding starts this evening around 6PM EST.

All of the gizmos are fancy, 11 are curly maple, 4 are exhibition grade walnut signed by me, like this one;

I think it helps when working up towards the tips on the bow and it makes it less likely you will hit the string...
Seems like common sense isn't very common any more...

This was the first one I made years ago, not much string clearance when you ran it up the limbs. I used screws to hold the pencil in place.

As a new bowyer I can verify that this gizmo helped me immensely with tillering. I also love it for its ingenious simplicity, something I always prefer to complexity.
